How Does SmartLipo Work?

Similar to traditional liposuction, Smartlipo requires the use of incisions and a fat suctioning device called a cannula. However, because the technology used is laser lipolysis, both the incisions and cannula are much smaller than those of a standard liposuction procedure. At the time of your treatment, Joseph Tamburrino, M.D. will maneuver the handheld laser device underneath the skin and throughout the treatment area. As fat cells come into contact with the laser, they will begin to swell and liquefy. Joseph Tamburrino, M.D. will then remove the liquefied fat cells with the cannula. The Smartlipo laser also is able to stimulate collagen production, which assists in tightening and toning the skin following your procedure.

What To Expect

Even though the Smartlipo surgery is minimally invasive, it will still need to be completed in a fully accredited surgical facility. The anesthesia used for your surgery will depend on the area being treated. Your procedure will last about an hour, depending on the size and number of regions being addressed. After surgery, you can expect to see some bruising and experience some discomfort and swelling. However, these symptoms are completely normal and will fade over the coming weeks. Your fullest results will be seen within about six weeks following surgery.

In contrast, traditional liposuction may be more suited for large surface areas such as the back or belly.

Will Smartlipo create scars?

With Smartlipo, we only need to create very small incisions to fit the cannula. The cannula used for Smartlipo is much smaller than the traditional ones used in other liposuction procedures.
